Long Service & Good Conduct Medal presentation

Following the ceremony held at Kent Police College on Wednesday 25th November 2009, Kent Joint Branch Board would like to add their congratulations those colleagues who were awarded their long service and good conduct medals.

JBB treasurer Gary Sutton attended the presentation ceremony on behalf of the Joint Branch Board and presented the male recipients with a commemorative tie, and a silver brooch to the ladies.

The ties are silk and were specifically made for Kent JBB to match the colours of the Long Service & Good Conduct medal ribbon. Until recently female officers received a cravat in the medal ribbon colours but as the use of cravats has become less popular the board changed the presentation piece for ladies to the current silver brooch.

At the ceremony a rather long overdue tie was awarded to ex Chief Constable of Kent, Mr Barry Pain. Mr. Pain was present to see his daughter Sarah collect her long service award and although he may have qualified for his long service award more years ago than he cares to remember, and he may well have risen to ACPO status by the end of his career, he like all other Chief Officers was a federated rank once and so a belated tie from the Kent JBB was most appropriate in the circumstances.

The JBB Long Service and Good Conduct tie, has euphemistically become known as "the Tuesday tie" in the JBB office, on account that it has been decreed by the Chairman that the tie is to be worn on Tuesdays in the JBB office, with a variety of sanctions being available to those who are wearing it, to be bestowed on whoever forgets to do so. With two retired officers and three serving officers currently working in the JBB office, all of whom are qualified to wear the tie, it has been suggested that on Tuesdays the office appears to have been taken over by a Crown green bowling team. Unfortunately with the Federation Office team having achieved the position of "wooden spoonists" at the last inter departmental summer bowls league at Headquarters we can confirm that they may look like a bowls team, but they certainly can't bowl !

The Tuesday trend has expanded to JBB meetings and those meetings that happen to fall on Tuesdays are increasingly being attended by more and more JBB members wearing their LS & GC tie. It is hoped that colleagues who are in a role that enables them to do so, will be inclined to wear their ties or their brooch on a Tuesday. Lets face it, the opportunity to wear their medals are few and far between, but a tie, or a brooch in the medal ribbon colours can be worn on any day, Tuesdays seemed as good a day as any.
