Officers meet Police Minister - Vernon Coaker MP

A Police Bureaucracy Roadshow was held on 14th April 2009. The event, asked for by Jan Berry - the governments Bureaucracy "Tsarina", was organised by Kent Police Federation and gave a number of officers from Kent Police the opportunity to meet with Vernon Coaker MP and provide him with a firsthand insight into the frustrations of working in a performance driven bureaucracy.

It is clear the Government has one target, namely increasing public confidence and trust. There are some forces who have abandoned tick box performance to wholly concentrate on this one measure. Mr Coaker was told of the demise of discretion due to the rigidity of a tick box performance regime. He made it clear that he wants officers to be able to exercise their professional judgement and, more importantly, feel supported to do so.

Officers gave numerous examples of when they have been restricted from exercising their discretion and the internal bureaucracy created by a tick box performance regime.
